These are the EIA's weekly stocks of crude oil, gasoline, and distillate (diesel and heating oil), plus the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. They are the clearest weekly read on whether supply is outrunning demand or falling behind it.
A build, when stocks rise, points to supply ahead of demand and tends to weigh on prices. A draw, when stocks fall, signals demand pulling ahead of supply and tends to lift them. The market reacts to these numbers every Wednesday.
Frequently asked
What are the current U.S. crude oil inventories?
The figures above are the latest EIA weekly stocks for crude oil, gasoline, and distillate, in million barrels, plus the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
What does a crude oil inventory build or draw mean?
A build means stocks rose, usually a sign supply is outpacing demand, which tends to soften prices. A draw means stocks fell, a sign demand is outpacing supply, which tends to firm prices.
What is the SPR?
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the federal emergency crude stockpile. Releases from or refills to the SPR affect available supply and can move crude prices.
