Gas prices eased last week as propane heating season sizing questions surface

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Sunday, October 04, 2026

Pump prices came off last week, according to a westerniowatoday.com readout on retail fuel. The source doesn't give a cents-per-gallon figure, so we know prices fell but not by how much. For jobbers that matters less for the gallon than for what it says about demand heading into the shoulder season, when gasoline volume thins and propane and heating oil make up more of the quarter's sales.

Generator propane

A homeowner floated running a 13-kW Generac standby unit off two propane tanks and got a reality check in the comments, per The Cool Down. For anyone who sells and delivers propane, the point is simple: a standby generator at load burns through a tank faster than buyers expect, and a two-tank setup that looks like enough can run dry in a long outage. This is a delivery and sizing problem, and it comes up just as outage season and cold weather pull residential propane demand up.

For a propane marketer this is the recurring fall call. Customers add a generator, undersize the supply, then want an emergency fill during the one week every truck is already routed tight. Operators who get ahead of it size the tank and the contract to the generator's actual draw before the first cold snap.

The freezer report

IndexBox put out a propane freezers market report running to 2035, pinning expansion on regulatory pressure and efficiency gains. It is a market-research projection, and it won't tell you how many gallons to put on a truck. Propane-powered refrigeration is a real niche for off-grid and rural sites with no reliable power, and it keeps a thin band of year-round gallons on the books. It is too small to change a jobber's winter volume; that comes from the heating load.

Heating oil

Nothing new crossed on the heating-oil side in the last day, which still matters this close to the draw-down. Distillate and heating oil set the Northeast winter, and the quiet stretch before inventories start pulling is when marketers lock supply and contract terms. A quiet news day doesn't mean the exposure has gone away.

What to watch

Whether last week's softer retail gasoline is a demand signal or just crude following through to the pump, and whether it holds as driving season ends. Watch early-season propane demand as generator installs and the first cold spell hit together, and watch distillate and heating-oil inventories as the Northeast heads toward the draw. The propane delivery squeeze, if it comes, shows up first in emergency-fill calls.
