Libya restarts two methanol plants and the 10,000-bpd Brega refinery as Ukrainian strikes tighten Russian diesel
Two methanol plants run by Libya's Sirte Oil Company are back in operation, and methanol is the one feedstock no biodiesel plant can run without. Libya's National Oil Corporation restarted them Sunday alongside the Brega refinery and a gas-processing unit, its first broad resumption of work at the complex since maintenance shut it down.
Methanol
Every gallon of FAME biodiesel gets made by cooking vegetable oil or animal fat with methanol. The methyl in methyl ester comes from that methanol. So when two plants come back, the global methanol pool gets a little deeper, and methanol is a real line item on a biodiesel producer's cost sheet.
Don't read too much into the size. Libya is a small methanol seller, and most US biodiesel buyers source closer to home off natural gas. Added barrels anywhere could take a few cents of pressure off a tight reagent, which is worth knowing when soybean oil is already doing most of the damage to your margin.
Renewable diesel works differently. The hydrotreaters that make it run on hydrogen, not methanol, so this news does nothing for the RD side of the book.
The Russian refinery strikes
Ukraine has folded its Kairos strike unit into a larger formation, the 7th Separate Center of the Unmanned Systems Forces, now numbering hundreds of personnel and tasked with coordinating long-range hits on Russian oil refineries. Bloomberg reported the reorganization.
More organized strikes on Russian refining mean less Russian diesel reaching export markets, and tighter global diesel is about the best thing that can happen to a biodiesel or renewable diesel producer. When the petroleum diesel crack widens, the renewable product competes against a higher number and the blend economics look better. The diesel cracks matter more here than anything out of Tripoli.
That ethanol study
A paper making the rounds, "ethanol-washed Eisenia boosts antioxidants and Akkermansia in mice," has ethanol in the headline and nothing for a fuel marketer in the body. It's a seaweed-and-gut-bacteria study. Skip it.
What to watch
Whether the Sirte methanol plants hold. Brega has a long record of age-related breakdowns, per the Libyan Audit Bureau cited by Reuters, and a restart is not the same as steady output.
Russian refinery runs are the bigger number for US biofuels. If the strikes keep product offline, diesel cracks could stay firm and pull biodiesel and RD economics with them. If Russia patches the damage fast, that support may fade. RIN prices and the soybean oil board still set the day-to-day, and neither moved on any of this.
