US propane inventories hit record Gulf Coast high as exports fall, running 19% above the five-year average
US propane inventories climbed more than expected last week, and Gulf Coast stocks reached a record high while exports fell sharply, according to RBN Energy. Total inventories are now 19% above the five-year average as the market moves toward the seasonal draw period. For marketers buying supply ahead of winter, that is a comfortable cushion. Full tanks and soft exports usually mean the front of the curve stays cheap, which is good news if you are filling customer tanks and bad news if you were hoping storage plays would pay this year.
The export side is what to keep an eye on. Gulf Coast barrels that do not leave on a ship stay home and weigh on domestic price. If overseas demand picks back up before the cold does, that cushion thins fast.
Suburban's Q3 loss
Suburban Propane Partners reported a fiscal Q3 2026 net loss of $17.5 million, or 26 cents per common unit, for the three months ended June 27. Revenue came in at $261.4 million, up slightly from $260.2 million a year earlier and ahead of the $255.0 million consensus, per MarketBeat. The loss still missed badly against an expected 15-cent loss, and adjusted EBITDA fell to $18.0 million.
A summer quarter loss at a heating-fuel distributor is normal. The size of the miss is the part worth noting, because it leans on weather and seasonal demand to make the fiscal 2027 case, and a warm start to winter would not help.
The autogas payments
The Propane Autogas Research Program is offering qualified commercial fleets $7,500 per eligible propane autogas vehicle, plus up to $10,000 for new refueling site prep. In exchange, fleets run the trucks on their normal routes and file quarterly operating data.
For a hauler weighing a move off diesel, that is real money against the upfront cost of conversion. The catch is the reporting commitment, so it fits operators who already track this data and want the offset.
Fisk and heating oil
Fisk built a custom truck for a propane marketer, per LP Gas Magazine. Heating oil futures eased, according to TradingView, which lines up with the soft tone across the propane and distillate complex this week.
What to watch
Whether propane exports recover before the draw season starts, which would tighten that 19% surplus quicker than the calendar suggests. Early-winter weather, since both Suburban's fiscal 2027 story and the pace of the inventory draw ride on it. And how many fleets bite on the autogas payments once the quarterly-data strings are clear.
