Propane & Heating Oil · DAILY BRIEF

Propane stocks stay above seasonal norms despite a smaller-than-expected build

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Thursday, July 02, 2026

U.S. propane stocks posted a smaller build than the market expected last week, and they are still well above seasonal levels. Production has eased off its early-June highs but remains high. For anyone filling tanks this summer, that points to comfortable supply and little reason for spot prices to firm up soon.

A smaller-than-forecast build would normally hint at tightening. It doesn't here. Starting inventory is high enough that one soft weekly number barely moves the picture. RBN Energy flags the production trend as the thing to track: if output keeps sliding through summer, the cushion gets thinner by fall heating season, though it looks comfortable now.

Heating oil

Heating oil prices consolidated, per TradingView. No breakout either direction. Distillate has been range-bound while crude works out where it wants to settle, and heating oil rides along with it. For jobbers carrying heating oil into the shoulder months, flat is workable. It lets you plan margins without chasing a moving rack.

New York's gas ban

A federal appeals court upheld New York's ban on gas hookups in new construction, LP Gas Magazine reports. This one matters past New York. The state's all-electric rule for most new buildings cuts propane and natural gas out of new residential load, and a court win gives other states cover to try the same. Propane marketers who count on new-home connections for tank sets should read the ruling closely. A legal green light for hookup bans could keep the new-construction channel slow in states that follow.

The Upshur County fire

A propane tank explosion destroyed a family's home in Upshur County, per KLTV. No wider supply angle here. It is the risk marketers live with: a leak and an ignition source turn a routine delivery into a liability claim and a headline. Worth a note to your drivers on leak checks and regulator inspections before the summer cookout season peaks.

Barton distribution

There's a proposal for regional propane distribution in Barton, per the Newport Daily Express. Small item, but a new hub changes the freight math for marketers nearby.

What to watch

Whether propane production keeps easing through summer, since that shapes how fat the cushion looks going into fall. And whether more states cite the New York ruling to push their own hookup bans, which could squeeze the new-construction channel for propane marketers over the next few years.
