US diesel tops $6 a gallon for the first time as Iran war squeezes supply
The national average diesel price crossed $6 a gallon for the first time, and GasBuddy called the record "unavoidable" while Iran-related oil disruptions keep supply tight. For carriers and fuel haulers, that is the number that sets next week's fuel surcharge and eats into every load that isn't fully passed through.
Crude did something odd underneath it. WTI dipped below $100 even as diesel set a fresh record. The war premium is landing on distillate, not the barrel, which points to a refining and supply problem rather than a raw-crude one. When the spread between crude and diesel widens like this, the pain sits with anyone buying the finished fuel and the relief, if it comes, lags the crude move by weeks.
Fuel surcharges
Every fleet running a diesel-indexed surcharge is about to reset higher off the government's weekly average. Shippers on older contracts with capped or slow-moving surcharge tables absorb the gap, and small carriers with no room to renegotiate feel it first. Jobbers delivering to trucking accounts should expect harder conversations about allocation and payment terms as their customers' fuel line jumps.
The cost is already moving downstream. Reports tie the diesel record directly to higher grocery and delivery prices, which is the mechanism that turns a fuel spike into a broad inflation story. Freight is the carrier, and $6 diesel rides on top of everything that moves by truck.
The UK HVO ruling
The UK Trade Remedies Authority published its final determination on September 10 and decided not to impose anti-subsidy duties on US hydrotreated vegetable oil biodiesel, even after finding the imports were subsidized and had injured UK producers. The authority had recommended a countervailing duty of £258.10 to £266.68 per tonne, then declined to apply it.
For a US operator this matters in one narrow way. US HVO producers keep duty-free access to a UK market they might have lost, which could support domestic renewable diesel volumes and the feedstock demand behind them. It does nothing for the pump price this week.
Other biofuels moves
WinGD will supply methanol and ethanol dual-fuel engines for Polaris Shipping's Newcastlemax bulkers, another marine order pointing away from straight diesel. Separately, researchers reported using immobilized bacterial lipase to convert waste cooking oil into biodiesel, a lab-stage process with no near-term bearing on supply.
What to watch
Whether the diesel record holds depends on the Iran disruption. Prices could ease if the flow of crude and product steadies, though the distillate crunch may take longer to unwind than crude. Watch the weekly diesel average for the surcharge reset, and watch whether refiners can rebuild distillate supply while the conflict runs.
