US diesel near records as an export ban is floated and Europe weighs a reserve release
Diesel is near a record in the US, and the cost is landing hardest on the people who move freight and work the fields. Truckers and farmers are paying it straight through, and Ohio trucking firms are calling it a crisis. The supply-policy talk around diesel is what jobbers should track now.
Goldman Sachs said a US ban on diesel exports would hit Latin America hardest, because US diesel covers as much as half of consumption across parts of the region. A shutoff would strand those buyers first. For a domestic hauler the read is simpler. An export ban would keep barrels home and could ease US pump prices, which is the argument for one when diesel runs this high.
Europe is moving the other way. The bloc is weighing a new release from diesel stocks after US pressure, according to Reuters, and reports of that release already pulled European diesel prices down. More barrels loose in the Atlantic basin could soften US distillate too, though nothing has been committed yet.
Propane exports
US propane exports averaged 2 million barrels a day in the first half of 2026, up 11% from a year earlier, the EIA said, with a record 2.1 million b/d in April. India and the rest of South Asia drove the pull, and record US production fed it. Middle East supply disruptions sent those buyers looking elsewhere, and US cargoes filled the gap.
For propane marketers the number works both ways. Strong export demand supports the price you buy at going into winter, and it also sets a floor under what cargoes cost. Watch the spread between export netbacks and what your retail customers will bear once heating season starts.
Pritzker Private Capital is exploring a sale of propane distributor EDP that could top $1 billion, per Private Equity Wire. Another large book of retail propane changing hands is worth tracking if you compete for the same tanks.
Gas tax and the pump
Ohio suspended its gas tax for 90 days to blunt rising fuel prices. For retailers in the state that is a margin and pricing question more than a windfall, since the cut is meant to pass to the customer and the 90-day clock is running.
Nationally, the average gas price fell 7 cents after a record-setting September, AAA said. Some relief at retail, though September set the bar high.
Russian refineries
Ukrainian drones hit the Volgograd refinery and the Samara oil hub overnight, with fires reported near a Lukoil refinery and what may be Europe's largest oil tank farm. Zelensky confirmed the strikes. Oil came under pressure anyway, per Rigzone, so the market is not pricing a lasting supply loss yet. Repeated hits on Russian refining could firm crude and distillate if they keep taking units offline.
What to watch
Whether an export ban moves from talk to an actual restriction on diesel shipments, and whether Europe commits to the stock release. Both would move US distillate. On propane, watch the export pace against early heating demand. And watch whether the Russian refinery strikes start removing enough capacity to show up in crude.
