Convenience-store satisfaction slipped in 2026, ACSI reports

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Tuesday, October 06, 2026

The American Customer Satisfaction Index showed convenience-store satisfaction slipping in 2026. A small dip, but the direction matters for operators whose foodservice and loyalty bets assume customers keep coming back on habit. When satisfaction softens, the inside sales that carry the store's margin are the first to feel it.

The satisfaction dip

The drop came from the inside experience, not fuel. For a jobber or single-store operator, that points attention inside the box: whether the register moves fast enough, and whether the food and loyalty programs are giving customers a reason to come back. Fuel brings them to the lot. The inside sale is where the money is, and a satisfaction score drifting down is an early read that the inside experience is wearing on people.

AI at the counter

A separate report says most c-store shoppers are now engaging with AI in some form. That covers a lot of ground, from chatbots to app recommendations to search before the trip. For operators the useful question is narrow: does it move a basket or just add a screen? Chains with real loyalty data could use it to push the next offer. Smaller operators may find the vendor pitch outruns the payoff for a while.

The favorite-store report

A new report names the country's favorite convenience store, and the headline point is that it isn't Buc-ee's, which gets most of the press for its scale and its bathrooms. The takeaway for other operators is that size and attention don't settle who customers rank first. Worth reading when the full list lands to see which formats scored.

A 47-year closure

One store closed after 47 years, long enough that it was a fixture for its block. These closures rarely make national news, but they show up in local foot traffic and in which sites a buyer wants. When a long-running independent closes, the question for nearby operators is whether that demand moves to them or just disappears.

Calendar and propane

C-Store Dive published its early read on the top 2027 trade shows, NACS and NATSO among them, worth blocking out now while 2026's last conferences wrap. On the propane side, the LP Gas Growth Summit put its retail leaders in front of the room, a reminder that the propane retail bench is its own network operators should know.

What to watch

Whether the ACSI dip holds or reverses in the next read, which chain tops the favorite-store list in full, and whether AI at the counter shows up in basket size or stays a line in a vendor deck.
