Retail motor-oil prices hold in September after 25% run-up since February
Retail motor-oil prices look to be settling after a hard first half of 2026. JobbersWorld tracked 89 product-family prices from August into late September and found 72 of them unchanged. The basket still runs 25.3% above where it was in February, and private-label brands did most of the recent lifting.
That pause matters on the backbar and in the quick-lube bay. Motor oil is a small line on a c-store shelf, but it carries good margin, and the past eight months of increases gave operators cover to move retail up without much pushback. If wholesale has flattened, the easy price hikes are done. Operators who kept raising shelf prices through the summer may find the next increase is the one customers notice.
The private-label detail is the part to sit with. National brands held while store brands climbed, which says the pressure now is on the value end of the shelf, where price-shoppers live. An operator leaning on private label for margin should check whether the current spread still beats the branded jug next to it.
Sheetz in Indiana
Sheetz confirmed its first Indiana store. The Pennsylvania chain plans to break ground next spring and open the site in summer, part of a wider Midwest push.
Sheetz competes on prepared food as much as fuel, and its made-to-order kitchen changes the math for nearby operators within a few miles. A single-store or small-chain operator in that trade area should assume the foodservice bar is about to move. Indiana has been Casey's and regional-chain country, and a built-out Sheetz forecourt with a full kitchen puts direct pressure on both fuel volume and inside sales.
One store next summer is not a market shift. It is a marker. Watch where the next Indiana announcements land, because chains rarely enter a state for a single site.
NACS lineup
GK Software said it will show its convenience and fuel technology at NACS in Las Vegas, Oct. 7-9, booth C6461. The pitch covers forecourt, retail operations, foodservice, self-checkout, and fleet.
The read here is the calendar. NACS is a week and a half out, and the vendor press is starting. Operators heading to Las Vegas should treat the next ten days of announcements as a preview and build a booth list now rather than wander the floor.
What to watch
Whether motor-oil wholesale stays flat through October or resumes climbing, since that decides the next shelf move. Where Sheetz plants its second and third Indiana stores. And what actually ships versus what gets announced at NACS, where the gap between demo and deployment is usually wide.
