Casey's buys ASAP Energy as Walmart extends fuel discounts to CITGO stations
Casey's is buying ASAP Energy, which is exiting the c-store channel entirely in the sale. Another independent operator cashes out to a regional consolidator, and the count of stores under a handful of big banners keeps climbing. For jobbers who supply the independents, every one of these deals is a supply contract that could get rebid or absorbed once the new owner's own logistics take over.
Walmart and CITGO
Walmart is extending its fuel savings program to CITGO stations. That puts Walmart's discount in front of drivers at forecourts Walmart doesn't own, which widens the reach of a loyalty play that already pressures the pump price at nearby independents. If you run a store within a few miles of a participating CITGO, you may see traffic move on a few cents a gallon. The discount is funded to pull grocery and membership customers, so the fuel margin hit lands on someone else's forecourt.
Collectibles and foodservice
A collectible-card craze is pulling shoppers into stores. In South Korea, CU sold all 30,000 units of its Rescene corn cream bread on the Thursday launch day, each package carrying one of 27 K-pop photo cards. It matters here because the mechanic is simple and portable: a cheap mystery insert that turns one purchase into several as buyers chase the card they want. US operators leaning on foodservice and proprietary snacks could test the same hook. The craze now runs past K-pop into book-themed bookmarks and sports cards, so the format travels across demographics.
Pump prices and politics
Gas prices are becoming a political issue again. In New York it's showing up in state politics coverage, and in Tucson rising prices are cutting into what rideshare and taxi drivers take home. Neither is a supply story, but both signal the kind of public pressure that pushes states toward gas-tax holidays or fresh scrutiny of retail margins. Operators in high-tax states could see that debate reopen.
Yesway in Arizona
Yesway opens its first Arizona store in October, part of a plan to build 130 new-to-industry stores over five years. New-build growth from a chain that size adds forecourt competition in markets it enters and fresh fuel volume for whoever wins the supply.
What to watch
Whether Casey's keeps ASAP's existing fuel supply arrangements or moves the volume to its own network. How far Walmart pushes the CITGO tie-up and whether other majors match it. And the NACS Show, previewed this week by C-Store Dive. Operators deciding where to spend next year's capital will hear the foodservice and loyalty pitches there, with the collectibles tactic likely in the mix.
