US ethanol output rose 5% and exports jumped 17% in the latest EIA week

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Thursday, October 08, 2026

US ethanol production rose 5% in the latest EIA weekly data, exports climbed 17%, and stocks slipped 1%. For blenders, that combination matters: more gallons leaving the plants while inventories draw down instead of piling up. Firm demand against a leaner domestic cushion tends to support the blendstock price you pay at the rack.

Corn still going into the tank

USDA put August corn use for alcohol and other purposes at 528 million bushels, up 4% from a year ago. Of that, 478 million bushels went into fuel ethanol, also up 4%. Month to month the picture was flatter: total corn for processing fell less than 1% from July. Soybean crush ran 210 million bushels in August against 198 million a year earlier, per UkrAgroConsult citing USDA. Grain demand from the fuel side is holding, which keeps feedstock costs and ethanol margins tied together the way they have been all year.

The Cuba biodiesel seizure

US authorities intercepted 90 consignments of biodiesel worth close to $3 million that were headed to Cuba, CBS News reported Wednesday. The cargo was bound for Enetec S.A., a Havana fuel wholesaler that Treasury's OFAC sanctioned in July. Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection ran the stop as part of a widening look at US fuel exports allegedly breaching sanctions. For a US exporter or trader moving renewable product, it is a reminder to vet the buyer, since the agencies are now scrutinizing biodiesel shipments for sanctions breaches the way they already scrutinize crude.

Suburban Propane and the RNG question

Suburban Propane units are near $16.97, down 0.64% on the day and off 3.14% over 30 days. The five-year total shareholder return is still 56.98%, so longer-term holders have done fine even as the recent tape looks soft. The open question for SPH is whether its renewable natural gas push can carry growth that propane volumes no longer deliver on their own. Investors looking at the units this week are weighing that RNG bet more than the propane book.

What to watch

Next week's EIA report will show whether the 5% production bump and the export surge hold or were a one-week spike. Watch ethanol stocks: another draw could firm blendstock pricing into winter. On the enforcement side, more biodiesel seizures could push some exporters away from gray-market destinations. And keep an eye on where corn goes from here, since flat month-to-month processing could cap how much more ethanol plants push out.
