Diesel hits a record as ethanol and biodiesel feedstock questions build overseas

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Sunday, September 13, 2026

Diesel prices hit a record, and for anyone blending biodiesel or moving renewable diesel that number sets the ceiling you get paid against. When ULSD runs high, B100 and renewable diesel clear easier, because the petroleum gallon they displace costs more. The report notes consumers could pay the price at the pump. For a hauler that means the fuel surcharge conversation starts over, and for a jobber carrying a biodiesel blend it could widen the room to move product.

India's feedstock math

India is weighing how to feed its 2026-27 ethanol supply year, and sugar economics may decide whether the mix leans on cane or grain. That is a domestic supply call, so the direct hit to a US c-store is small. It matters at one remove. India is a heavy player in both sugar and ethanol, and if cane gets pulled toward fuel, global sugar and ethanol trade flows can shift, which touches the corn and world ethanol price a US producer watches. Worth tracking, not worth leading your day over.

Indonesia's fixed prices

Indonesia fixed its Pertalite gasoline and biodiesel prices. That holds its biodiesel blending steady, and since Indonesia's mandate is one of the biggest pulls on palm oil in the world, steady demand keeps global vegetable oil tight. Tight feedstock abroad firms the soybean oil that US biodiesel runs on.

Mango kernels

A research group turned mango kernels into biodiesel and a hydrogen-rich syngas in one process. It is a lab result, not a supply source you can buy against this quarter. File it under things that could matter years out if the economics ever pencil, and move on.

What to watch

The near-term signal for US biofuel margins is the diesel record and whether it holds. If ULSD stays high, renewable diesel and biodiesel blend economics look better, and the surcharge fights get louder across freight.

Feedstock is the slower story. India's cane-versus-grain decision and Indonesia's locked biodiesel demand both pull on global sugar and vegetable oil, and both feed back into the corn and soybean oil prices that set what a US producer pays. Neither has printed a number a US buyer can act on yet.

Watch soybean oil for the feedstock cost signal, and watch whether the diesel record sticks or eases as more supply comes back. Those two lines, not the mango kernels, are what move a US biofuel P&L this month.
