US ethanol capacity rose to 18.375 billion gallons in June as UK keeps US biodiesel duty-free

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Friday, September 11, 2026

U.S. ethanol production capacity reached 18.375 billion gallons in June, per BioEnergy Times. More nameplate capacity means the industry can run harder into blend demand that is still mostly capped at the E10 wall, which keeps pressure on D6 RIN values and thins margins for anyone selling straight ethanol into a saturated road-fuel pool.

US HVO stays duty-free

The UK will keep letting in U.S. HVO biodiesel duty-free even after its own investigation found the imports were subsidized and were hurting domestic producers. For a U.S. renewable diesel or HVO maker, that keeps a real export outlet open at a time when domestic RIN and LCFS credit values have been soft. Britain took the injury finding and chose not to act on it, which is unusual. If UK producers push back hard, that door could narrow, so watch it.

Crude backdrop

Oil prices fell sharply after double-digit weekly gains that had carried crude above $100, per CNBC. Cheaper crude pulls petroleum diesel down with it and squeezes the spread that lets biodiesel and renewable diesel pencil out on their own. When crude is high, biofuels look cheap on a blend. When it drops like this, blenders lean harder on RINs and LCFS credits to close the gap, so a soft crude week could firm up credit demand.

Ethanol at sea

Polaris Shipping ordered WinGD dual-fuel engines that can burn methanol and ethanol for its Newcastlemax fleet. It is a small demand signal, not a market mover. Every marine engine that can take ethanol adds a sliver of long-term offtake outside the road-fuel pool that ethanol has been stuck inside, and marine is one of the few places that pool could grow.

Waste-oil feedstock

Researchers reported a reusable bacterial lipase, immobilized so it survives repeated batches, that converts used cooking oil into biodiesel. Feedstock cost decides biodiesel economics, and cheaper processing of waste grease could help at the margin. This is lab-stage work and years from anything a jobber would see in a supply contract.

What to watch

Whether soft crude keeps squeezing biodiesel and renewable diesel margins and pushes more of the blend obligation onto RIN and LCFS credits, which would lift credit prices. Whether UK producers force London to revisit the HVO ruling, which could close a U.S. export outlet. And India, where the think tank ICRIER is urging a pullback from E15 blending on supply constraints. If the biggest growth market for ethanol slows its own blending, that could loosen global balances U.S. exporters have been counting on to move surplus gallons.
