Neste gains on Bayer biofuels deal as EIA lifts its oil price forecast

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Thursday, September 10, 2026

Neste, a major supplier of renewable diesel into the US West Coast market, rose after signing a biofuels agreement with Bayer. Details are thin. For a US operator the reason to watch it is feedstock and supply. Neste's renewable diesel feeds California's low-carbon fuel program, and a tie-up with an agriculture company points at where the next round of low-carbon feedstock could come from. If it firms up soybean or cover-crop supply, it may ease some of the feedstock cost pressure that has squeezed RD margins.

The crude side

The EIA raised its oil price forecast, citing supply disruptions in the Middle East. That matters to biofuels for a plain reason. When crude and diesel rise, the RIN and LCFS credits riding on every blended gallon move with them, and the gap between petroleum diesel and renewable diesel widens or narrows with the crude price. Higher crude could support RD economics if it holds. The EIA gave a forecast, not a floor, so treat it as one.

Ethanol demand abroad

India is pushing past its 20 percent ethanol blend. Tarun Kapoor, an advisor in the prime minister's office, said the E20 program has worked and the next step is flex-fuel vehicles and blending above 20 percent. Australia is fighting over its own E10 mandate, with the sugar industry there calling for a public debate after being left off a Queensland hearing.

Neither is a US story on its own. The through-line for a US operator is export demand. India buying more ethanol, homegrown or imported, tightens the global corn and ethanol balance that US producers sell into. Watch whether any of that demand pulls on US ethanol exports.

Mozambique

The consortium behind the Mozambique LNG project, led by TotalEnergies, is tendering for a plant in Cabo Delgado to make about 5,000 tonnes a year of coconut biodiesel. It is small and local, meant to build a low-carbon fuel supply chain around the LNG site. No US impact. It is a marker of how oil majors are attaching small biofuel projects to big fossil developments.

What to watch

Whether the Neste-Bayer deal names actual feedstock volumes or stays a press release. Whether the EIA's higher crude forecast holds through the next monthly update, since RIN and LCFS values track it. And whether rising ethanol demand out of India shows up in US export figures over the coming weeks. On a quiet domestic day for biofuels, the numbers that would move a US operator's margin are the crude forecast and the RD feedstock read, not the mandates overseas.
