India denies E20 fuel-tank damage claim after viral image; Ukraine drones hit Syzran refinery

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Sunday, July 12, 2026

India's government fact-check unit has called false a social-media image claiming that ethanol-blended petrol wrecks a vehicle's fuel tank. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the E20 sold by the state oil marketing companies meets Bureau of Indian Standards specs, and that ethanol and petrol mix completely and do not separate into layers when the fuel is on spec.

The argument matters to a US jobber because the same consumer complaint shows up here every time a station moves up a blend level. The customer decides the new fuel ate his tank or his fuel line, and that his warranty is now worthless. A spec sheet does not usually settle that complaint once it starts spreading.

Phase separation

The ministry's line is chemically fair as far as it goes. Ethanol and gasoline mix. What breaks the mix is water, and water gets in through bad seals and fittings on the tank. Keep the fuel dry and to spec and you get one phase.

Which is why the retail end of this is a housekeeping story. Water checks on the UST and tight fittings are the practical defense against a viral photo showing up with your brand on the canopy.

Ethanol seizure in Kenya

Kenya's DCI raided an estate in Thika, recovered a stock of ethanol and arrested seven people. Diverted industrial ethanol is a live problem anywhere volumes and duty differentials are large, and the enforcement risk sits with whoever last handled the product. Worth a glance at your own chain of custody if you touch denatured alcohol at all.

Drone strike on Syzran refinery

Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces struck the Syzran refinery in Russia's Samara region. Russian refinery outages have supported product cracks repeatedly this year, and diesel is where it lands hardest. If Syzran runs are cut for any length of time, the pull could show up in export barrels well before it shows up in a US rack price.

What to watch

Whether Russian authorities confirm damage or downtime at Syzran, and how quickly. On the ethanol side, watch whether India's fact-check settles the consumer noise or feeds it, because the blend-level trust fight travels and the next version of that viral image could just as easily have an E15 pump in it.
