This is the U.S. average retail price of regular gasoline, published weekly by the EIA. It is the national pump average, and the number most drivers and reporters mean when they talk about gas prices.

For retailers, gasoline is a thinner-margin, higher-traffic product than diesel. Pump prices track RBOB wholesale futures with a lag, and the spread between them is the street margin that funds the rest of the store.

Frequently asked

What is the current U.S. gas price?

The number at the top of this page is the latest EIA national average retail price for regular gasoline, in dollars per gallon, with its publication date.

When does the EIA update gas prices?

Weekly, on Monday afternoon. The figure reflects a survey of retail outlets taken that Monday.

Why are gas prices higher in some states?

State fuel taxes, regional fuel specifications (such as California's CARBOB blend), and local supply and distribution costs vary widely, so the same wholesale gallon reaches the pump at different prices by state.
