Working gas in storage is the volume of natural gas held underground, in billion cubic feet. It builds through the summer as gas is injected and draws through the winter as it is withdrawn for heating, so the level relative to normal signals how comfortable the heating season looks.

We show propane stocks alongside it. Propane competes with heating oil and natural gas through the winter, so the two storage pictures together frame heating-fuel supply.

Frequently asked

What is the current U.S. natural gas storage level?

The figure above is the latest EIA weekly working-gas-in-storage total in billion cubic feet, with propane stocks shown alongside.

What are the injection and withdrawal seasons?

Injection season runs roughly April through October, when gas is added to storage. Withdrawal season runs November through March, when it is drawn down for heating demand.

When is the natural gas storage report released?
