Propane & Heating Oil · DAILY BRIEF

US propane stocks drew down counterseasonally as exports and demand climbed, but inventories stay well above normal

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Thursday, September 03, 2026

US propane inventories fell last week when they normally build, RBN Energy reports, as both exports and product supplied rose. The draw is worth noting for jobbers because it came against the season, not with it. Stocks usually pile up this time of year ahead of winter heating demand. They pulled lower instead.

On its own the draw looks like a tightening signal, but the fuller picture is softer. Even after the draw, US propane stocks remain well above their historical range, which means the cushion going into heating season is still fat. One counterseasonal week doesn't drain a surplus that took months to build.

What moved the barrel

Two things pulled at the same time. Exports increased, which sends product out through the Gulf docks and off US balance sheets. Product supplied increased too, meaning more propane moved into domestic hands. Both take barrels out of storage. When export demand and home demand climb together, even a well-stocked market can post a draw in a week it would usually build.

For a retail propane dealer, the figure to watch is where inventories sit relative to normal, and they're still high. That argues for calm pre-buy pricing rather than a scramble. A single week of tightening is not a trend, and RBN's own framing is that the overhang is still there. If exports keep running hot and the draws stack up week over week, the story changes. One print doesn't make the change.

Route 90 closed

A vehicle hit a propane tank at Tolman Pond Market and forced the closure of Route 90, the PenBay Pilot reports. No injury or spill detail beyond the road closure is in the report.

It's a local incident, not a market event, but it's the kind of thing every propane hauler and c-store operator files away. A stationary tank at a retail site is a fixed hazard the moment a car leaves the road. The defense is physical: bollards and enough setback to keep a car that leaves the pavement away from the tank. A closure like this is a free reminder to walk your own lot and look at what a distracted driver could reach.

What to watch

Whether the propane draw holds up next week or reverts to the usual seasonal build. If exports stay strong and product supplied keeps climbing, the surplus could thin faster than the current cushion suggests. For now the barrels are still there, and the pricing case for heating season hasn't tightened much. Watch the export pace and the weekly inventory number.
