Heating oil hits 21-week high as Colonial Group moves to buy Brookneal distributor

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Tuesday, September 01, 2026

Heating oil futures reached a 21-week high, TradingView reported, right as dealers sit down to price pre-buy contracts for winter. Whatever it costs to fill the rack now is what customers get quoted for October delivery, and the number went up.

The 21-week high

Heating oil hasn't traded this high in about five months. For a dealer, the timing is what stings. Late summer and early fall is when a lot of Northeast homeowners lock in a fixed price or a seasonal cap, and the wholesale cost sets the floor under those deals. Buy your customers' winter gallons at today's number and the margin holds; guess low and it doesn't.

We don't have a cents-per-gallon print here, only the 21-week mark, so treat it as a direction and nothing more. Distillate inventories through the fall build are the thing to price off, not one day's high.

Colonial buys a Brookneal distributor

Colonial Group agreed to acquire a fuel and propane distributor based in Brookneal, Virginia. The company runs an emergency-power business too, putting generators and fuel into hospitals and data centers when the grid drops. The deal was announced August 28 and is expected to close October 1, subject to customary conditions and regulatory approval.

Colonial, out of Savannah, picks up wider distribution into Virginia along with the seller's lubricants line. For independent jobbers in the mid-Atlantic, it's one more family operator being bought by a bigger company, and the propane side is where the buying has been most active this year.

Veteran heating aid

The Galen Cole Family Foundation opened applications for its veteran heating oil assistance program, WABI reported. It's a Maine program, small in dollars against a full regional heating bill, but for dealers who deliver to those households it's a payment source that clears. Worth knowing which of your accounts qualify before the cold sets in.

LP Gas Growth Summit

The 11th LP Gas Growth Summit opened in Florida, per LP Gas Magazine. It's the propane retail crowd, meeting on margins and staffing. Deals like the Colonial one are part of what that crowd is watching.

What to watch

Whether the Colonial deal closes October 1 as planned, and whether other regional propane and heating oil books get picked off before winter. On price, watch distillate inventories through the fall build. A 21-week high in September could ease if stocks come in heavy, or hold if they don't. Either way, dealers pricing pre-buys this month are doing it off a higher cost than they were in spring.
