Carriers fight diesel technician shortage with cheap shop fixes as maintenance labor tightens
Keeping diesel technicians is one of the labor problems quietly setting maintenance costs across freight, and some of the fixes that work are cheap. Amanda Schuier, the former general chairman of the American Trucking Associations' Technology & Maintenance Council, approved air conditioning for her company's Houston maintenance shop last year at the technicians' request. In a region built on heat, the difference showed up fast. The air was cooler and the shop ran more orderly. Techs said it felt more professional.
The technician gap
Schuier ran maintenance strategy at Jetco Delivery when she made the call. Her read was that small changes show whether a company takes its people seriously, and that keeps a skilled tech from walking to the shop across town.
That matters to anyone hauling fuel or freight. A carrier that can't staff its bays pays for it in downtime and outside labor rates, with trucks sitting instead of running. The mechanic who fixes a diesel engine is getting harder to hire and harder to keep, and the shops losing that fight feel it in their cost per mile before they feel it anywhere else.
Air conditioning alone won't fix a national shortage. A Houston bay that techs want to work in is a cheaper problem than a bay you can't staff at all, and Schuier's point is that the low-cost upgrades are worth making before the expensive ones come due.
Portugal's diesel cut
Portugal's PSD party said it will back a package on Monday to lower fuel prices, including a VAT cut and dropping the excise duty on diesel. For a US jobber or hauler, this one is worth noting only to set aside. A European domestic tax move doesn't touch US rack prices or the surcharge you are billing this week.
It is a reminder that diesel taxes are a lever governments reach for when pump prices bite. US operators watch the state-level version of that fight, not Lisbon's.

Whether more fleets follow Schuier's example and treat shop conditions as a retention tool rather than a perk.
